4 Easy Life Hacks for Self-Care

Aug 24, 2017

Nowadays, there are a number of gurus out there who will give you their brand of lifestyle advice. Everyone has a different spin on self-care. Eventually, of course, it’s up to you to decide exactly what’s important to you—career, family and friends, health, hobbies etc.

You might want a combination of all these things, at least at the back of your mind. However, it’s easy to forget the importance of a rounded lifestyle when you’re feeling pressure from one of these many areas to perform better. Many people end up spending too much time at work, climbing up the corporate ladder. Others may become so focused on taking care of their families that they never make time for anything else.

One of the areas that often seems to suffer, as a result of this lifestyle, is health. Ailments such as obesity, high blood pressure, back pain etc. are directly related to work and life stress. In order to avoid these, try following a lifestyle that includes a little bit of everything. Here are a few life hacks:

Speak Up

You’re never going to be able to get away from work if you don’t speak up. You need to tell your boss that your health is suffering because of all the time you’re spending at work. You need some time to exercise, rest and unwind; there’s no need to feel guilty about this.

Most bosses will understand the need to cut down your overtime, especially if you provide them with new solutions such as getting you an assistant, delegating your tasks or mechanizing some of the things you do. Nowadays, there are so many apps and softwares designed to make people’s lives easier. Why not try to figure out whether there’s one which will work for you and help you to cut down on all the hours you work?

If it’s simply not possible to work less, you can at least try to take regular breaks every couple of hours. Go for a short walk or listen to some music. Stretch. You’ll feel so much better afterwards.

Wake Up Earlier

It’s a fact that people who wake up earlier get a lot more work done. Your brain is fresh early in the morning and your tasks feel more enjoyable. Why not use this extra time to go for a walk or prepare healthy meals for you and your family? Both options will help you to improve your health. But remember not to stay up late every night in addition to waking up early or you’ll miss out on your sleep.

Call Your Friends

When you get caught up in work or family, it’s easy to lose track of your friends. However, it’s necessary to spend more time with friends if you want to live a rounded life. Whether you’re chatting over coffee or going to see a movie, being with friends helps you to relax.

Hanging out with friends also enables you to see things from new and different perspectives. This way, you won’t get stuck in a rut. You’ll be trying out new things. You’ll also be talking about how you feel and what you’re doing in your life, which can help you to get things off your chest and become more self-aware.

Be Creative

How are you supposed to make the time and the head space needed for creativity when you’re being bombarded by work and family demands from all sides? The answer is that you don’t have to be wildly creative. You can just be creative in a small way.

Put together a new outfit, try out a different shade of lipstick, sketch something that catches your eye, scribble a few words on a paper napkin. The idea is not to write the next NYT bestseller but just to do something which makes you feel good. Making something, no matter how small, always gives you a feeling of satisfaction.
